About
Fibre Training Core Course OP-456-61 will give you the key skills to install, test and troubleshoot a fibre optic link. The course is suitable for engineers who want to start working in the fibre industry or those wishing to improve their fibre skills. The Fibre Masterclass is a practice based course of 23 practical exercises running over three days.
Training Course OP-456-61 will give you the key fibre skills of splicing, testing and terminating, after which you will be able to install, test and troubleshoot a fibre optic link. This core course is suitable for anyone who wants to start working in the fibre industry or wishes to upskill.
Practical training for industries using fibre
OP-456-61 is a practice-based fibre training course consisting of 23 practical modules supported by a comprehensive workbook and training notes. The course has been delivered to individuals, telecom and datacom installers, aerospace and rail companies, power utilities, offshore and renewable energy companies and military organizations.
Splicing
You will start with an introduction to fibre showing how fibre works, its benefits and how to calculate losses. You follow that with nine hours of splicing and will make a patch panel, a wall box and a fibre Node joint as used in telecom, FTTx and renewables. You will also learn how maintain the splicer and cleaver and the best hand tools to use.
Testing
The Fibre Training Course Testing modules include seven hours of hands on OTDR and loss testing. As a result, you will set up the OTDR, store and compare traces and produce test reports. Exercises include testing short links, long cables and through splitters. As a result, you build an ability to interpret fibre faults such as bends, bad splices, poor connectors and components.
Terminating
Finally, you go on to learn how to clean and inspect connectors, identify damage and terminate connectors directly on to cables using two of the latest mechanical and fusion splice on connector methods.
By the end of the course you will be able to do the following:
SPLICING
Fibre preparation – prepare fibres and make them ready for splicing using the best methods and tools
Cable Stripping – how to prepare cables – indoor, aerial and armoured for jointing without damaging the fibres using the best tools and methods
Fusion Splicing – splice optical fibres quickly and with low losses – how to avoid weak splices
Repair a broken fibre – how to repair a fibre in an existing joint
How to maintain a fusion splicer for optimum performance what can you do in the field
How to splice a 1U patch panel efficiently and neatly – an internal cable is spliced to pigtails
How to splice a small wall box – with little space to work with you need to take extra care to produce a good result.
How to splice a multifibre multitube cable into a Node joint – telecom, FTTx and renewable energy use them – take your splicing skills up a notch
TESTING
How to test a fibre link using a visible light source – easy to use for fault finding but we show what else it will do
How to test a link with a source and meter then produce an Insertion Loss test Report – the gold standard test but we will show you the best method.
How to setup an OTDR, pulse width, range and averaging time and how test short and long cables then how to automate testing to work faster.
OTDR for commissioning – generate professional test results for your customers or for your own records direct from the OTDR.
OTDR for troubleshooting – find out what is going on in that fibre link, is there a break, a bend, a bad connector, a bad splice or high reflections?
Return Loss testing – does the fibre link have too much reflection causing bit errors or video issues?
How to analyse traces on a PC and generate a professional test report quickly.
Bare fibre testing – test cables prior to installation
CONNECTORS
Connector Inspection – identify connector faults using hand held and video microscopes.
Connector Cleaning – you will learn to clean connectors properly using the latest and best methods
Connector Termination – learn the best ways to put a connector onto fibre, mechanical and fusion splice on connectors.
